Grace's CC v Walthamstow Horizontals CC
3 June 2007

It was almost a home game for Graces' opponents Walthamstow Horizontals, who had to travel all of a mile to Graces' home at Highams Park, but they found the home side far too strong for them on the day. Winning the toss the visitors elected to bat on a fine hot and sunny afternoon, but were soon in trouble when Shofiq took a wicket with his second ball. Bielby, sharing the new ball accounted for the Horizontals' number three and the score reached 27-2 when a double bowling change brought about further trouble for the visitors who slumped to 43-5, thanks to some fine bowling by Akhtar and Mappin. At this point skipper Hardisty, fearing a rout, took the pressure off giving the more occasional bowlers a chance to turn their arm over. The Horizontals added 74 for the sixth wicket before the return of Mappin broke the partnership, but it was the return of Akhter that finished them off. His figures of 4-12 from 7 overs with 3 maidens was a fair reflection of his performance.

Faced with a target of 158 Grace's got off to a confident start and despite losing Akhter for 18 with the score on 38 and Hope, who had obviously decided that the match should be finished before the bar risked running out of lager, for 12 from seven balls with the score on 51. Mendis was another to get himself out, being stumped from a rather over-ambitious attempt to launch the ball into space with the score on 106. All this time Stockinger had been playing some fine shots before being adjudged lbw for a fine 58. Bielby came and went for a brisk 20 including a six and three fours but it was left to skipper Hardisty to secure the win by a very comfortable five-wicket margin.
